$900-1,100 is very doable for a 1 bed. With that said, the commute from NB to Newark isn't all that ideal. New Brunswick can be pretty shabby, though a decent city overall, but judging by the way you put emphasis on !!!Safety!!!, I'd suggest you cross NB off your list.
Edison is a lot safer/nicer than NB, but you still have a lot of CLOSER options.
Look into Nutley, Lyndhurst, and Rutherford. Very safe, cultured, and friendly communities- The commute to/from Newark from these towns can range from 15-30 minutes depending on traffic.

Do an online search for rentals in the community you are interested in. You can start off at various websites such as NJ.com or even check craigslist.com, just the usual cautions about not sending anyone from craigslist any money apply.
