Next year my husband is planning on transfering jobs from Massachusetts to Berlin. He hopes to be working in the new prison they are building. I was just wondering if anyone knew which of the three towns (Lancaster, Gorham, or Jefferson) would be the best town to raise a young family? I am a special education teacher and will soon be getting my masters as a reading specialist. Does anyone know how the school systems are in those towns? As far as employment and for my kids? I come from a small town in MA and we are use to driving 15 minutes to the grocery store and 45 minutes+ to go shopping.

I prefer Lancaster myself. It seems like the people really care about the Downtown and everything seems fairly well maintained. It is the county seat. It is a bit of a drive to get to Berlin, but all the roads are state highways (highway 2 to highway 16). The outskirts of Gorham have a bit newer housing (Fieldstone Drive area) and the town of Randolph. Gorham has more of a clustered development pattern with schools, but tends to be more oriented toward tourists.

Lancaster has in-town housing which tends to be clustered in a higher density. This area has more of a neighborhood setting. The area "out east" on the outskirts of Lancaster has newer housing along with many horse farms. It is a mixture of woods and fields with great mountain views all around. I am not sure you can get cable internet in the far outskirts of town, though.

I was wondering if anyone could reccommend any good realtors or make me aware of any shady realtors for the northern/ Coos county area.

We recently moved to Lancaster and haven't been disappointed. The town itself is such a cute place. We live out of town on Pleasant Valley Rd and we have satellite service for both TV and internet. Fairpoint for phone, but only offers dial up out here. I haven't had dial up for 10 years!!

The realtor we used was Aurore Hood. She really worked for us and went above and beyond.

Thanks Kara! I have seen some of Aurore's listings and her website looks good, too. I have two young children who will be going to school in the next couple of years. I hope the schools are good up there. I was pretty happy to see that Lancaster Elementary offers Kindergarten. Since I have heard that New Hampshire doesn't require public kindergarten. We are hoping to come up for a visit in April and possibly check out a couple of places!!!

Default Lancaster

Hi -

I recently moved here and live in Whitefield, NH on the town line between Whitefield and Lancaster. The school district has good programs for the kids and they really account for every penny spent.

My boys are Boy Scouts in Lancaster and I really like the community.
Good luck with the move.
