Locked out of my house for the day, I decided to take the kids for a long drive after lunch. Just headed out west on 101. The landscape sure changes after Milford! Very pretty, with the winding road, mountains covered with trees. And now I know why Bedford is considered suburbia. Everything looks so different. It was like driving from Los Angeles to Big Bear Lake. Very beautiful, glad I made the trip.
There's a pumpkin festival in Keene each fall, right? I'm hoping to make it out there when the kids get a little older.
Keene is a really beautiful place, IMO. The drive is also spectacular. Have you even been to the mill shops there? The place is called Colony Mill Marketplace. I would describe is a "mall" in a renovated mill, but the shops are all small and/or local. No Gaps or Abercrombies. I like to go there sometimes for gift shopping.
I haven't. This was my first time driving beyond Milford. I did see a long row of something. It looked like stores but it was a long narrow rectangle of glass or plastic or something. You couldn't really see inside from the road. I was wondering what it was.
The Colony Mills is a large renovated mill, with red brick. Imagine a collection of stores inside one of those riverside mills in Manchester.
I do love that drive, through Wilton and Peterborough.
Yes, there is a big pumpkin festival in Keene. It's 1 or 2 weekends before Halloween. I have gone to 4 of them in the past 7 years; the last one being this past October. This last one was extremely crowded ~ much more so than the previous ones I've been to, which made it less fun, in my opinion. Everyone brings a carved jack-o-lantern or two to add to the displays. There's a small area selling crafts, and food from some of the local restaurants selling outside, too. This past year, we brought our 3 year old granddaughter with us ~ too hard to maneuver a stoller in the crowds, though.
Nancy, there were rumors circulating that Pumpkin Festival 2010 was the last one, so this may have been part of the reason for increased attendance. As far as I know, this was a RUMOR only, and the festivities will continue in 2011 and beyond
