bellaboo,

Carson City's crime rate is very low, and my family has only experienced crime here once (hit and run). There is one High School, Carson High School, with 2,500+ students. (There is another alternative High School for those with issues in the public school). Carson City is just a short drive away from beautiful Lake Tahoe and Reno. It's a good place to live.

Carson City has a lot of drug-related crime, but other than that, nothing. There are several good neighborhoods where little to no crime occurs (my advice is staying away from Woodside Drive and Como Street, and the surrounding areas).

As a very recent graduate of the school system, I can't say I think too highly of it. Then again, we have ONE high school with ONE alternative school and only TWO small charter schools. The teachers throughout the district are overburdened.

We have one newspaper, which I work for, the Nevada Appeal. It seems fairly liberal in bent so if that bothers you, subscribe to the Reno Gazette-Journal instead.

Gas is currently at about $2.80 a gallon. Milk costs about $3 a gallon. Bread is about a buck fifty to two bucks a loaf (for mid-range stuff). Cigarettes, if that's your thing, are at about $3.50 a pack (for mid-range cigarettes).

I have lived here for 12 years and working for the Appeal I tend to see a lot of it. If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

I am curious about the CC area - I am considering a teaching job in the area next year, and some of the locals I spoke to told me to avoid the CC school district, as it has issues with crime. They also said that CC schools typically hire at the low end of the scale (teachers with less than 5 years experience) due to the lower cost.

I was also warned that property values for the area have risen significantly in the recent past, forcing a lot of families to leave the area due to housing costs.

Any insight into these issues?

I would be comparing this to the Reno area in general, such as Washoe Co., Yerington, Dayton, etc.

Thanks!

RM

carson schools have crime in them in gville they had a metal detector installed the year we left because there is some trouble down there, with drugs too. carson city is the same lots of drugs some wanna be gangs and there is a white racist group in the high school. i lived on college parkway for a year which is by the airport and the college, and we had our appartment broken into by some teenagers. but there really isnt much major crimes like murder very often, hope that helps some

I lack specific knowledge of the areas though I am a regular visitor to a number of them.

You got apples and oranges and bananas in your mix.

For instance Washoe is the most expensive are of Nevada...much more than Las Vegas. Carson City is way below...and Yerington is way below that. You are probably working a three to one range in home prices.

You won't find much crime in the area in general. Schools are best in Washoe and get less as you go rural and cheaper.

We have lived here for 2 years and are GETTING OUT!! We ended up moving to Dayton because Carson was too much for us..and yet Dayton is too expensive as well. The schools are horrible..overcrowded and teachers who don't seem to care. I have never seen so much Meth use in my LIFE! There is no night-life unless you count Casinos. Not a lot of jobs to chose from. Yes its near Lake Tahoe and Reno..big deal. All of it is TOO expensive! The people HA..thats a joke. The woman want someone to take care of them so they do NOTHING with their life but pop out more kids they cannot afford! The weather is crappy and there is a reason why all the locals call it Carson ****ty!!

Life is what you make it. You make the decision to be happy or not, tis up to you. As soon as I hear some one say teachers don't care about their students,,, I have a problem... Why would anyone stick with it if they did not care about the students... Surely not the great pay and benefits.. A Cabbie or a dealer or a hair dresser in Vegas makes more than a teacher in the great state of Nevada.

Carson City is a fine place,, lots of sports for the kids, Edmunds field must have 10 soccer fields alone, great dirt or mountain biking. fine nude beaches just up the hill.. the Pine Nut range is a fine place to go for a walk. The Brewery Arts Center has great concerts. I have never found a good restuarant in Carson City,, but there may be one. Good Brothels on the east side of town.

i remember two guys from italy was a good resturant too yeah i noticed though when my kids were in school they had a couple of teachers that didnt care much what they did. in fact one teacher he was an english teacher at cvms and he told me one time that he has no idea what my daughter is doing in his class because she has never turned in anything, and he never said a word to me except when my husband and i called a parent teacher conference and that was toward the end of the school year! so they have issues with teacher there. why they stay i dont know jobs are not easy to come by in carson or the carson valley, so to go all the way to reno from gville or carson takes way to long, you know the highway in carson is at a crawl during rush hours.
