My DIL and her family were returning from McCook Sunday evening and saw a fireball overhead about 8:15. She called me on her cell phone immediately afterward and described it as "all of a sudden it turned really light and we looked up and saw it streaking and then saw this big explosion overhead." I was sitting at home and heard a loud boom at the same time. I thought it might have been thunder but there are no storms in the area.

Is there anyone on this forum in this area who saw this?

I don't live there now but from 1959 to 1981 lived in McCook, NE area and saw several strange things in the sky just have not talked much about it but would love to. Also have a good friend that lives 10 miles northand west of Cookie town so will call him and see if he saw anything.

Aren't there ICBM missile installations in Northwest, NE and Southwest, SD? Maybe they were doing tests on missile defense shield?? Kind of far reaching but who knows. I don't really see ET coming here just to suicide bomb himself in Nebraska, lol.

I'm the area (80 miles west), but I never saw it...
Now I'm going to have to go hunt and see if someone reported on this.

It was probably just a meteor. There was a similar sighting in Canada just recently, someone even got a video. Its spectacular!!!
I'll try to find the link and post it!

Mystery solved. What was witnessed most likely was the space shuttle re-entering earth's atmosphere last night on its way to a landing in California.

The shuttle was already on the ground at the time. Besides, the way my DIL described it was that it exploded and then disappeared in a flash of bright light. I, myself, heard the explosion and thought it was distant thunder.

Do meteors ever enter the atmosphere at the speed of sound? Maybe it broke that? Hell, idk.
