I'm terribly familar with specific areas of North Platte, but I don't think there is an area in North Platte that you must stay away from. Some just might be less desirable than others. I have never really hear any negatives about schools in North Platte. Here is link to the newspaper, that is a good source for rentals:

Default Rentals...

Hi! If you're looking to rent in the North Platte area, one place to contact would be Commercial Investment Services (CIS). They've got a good corner on the rental market there, with listings of properties. It's a property management company that is pretty decent to work through.
We got our first place through them, and it was a nice 3 bedroom, nice neighborhood, for $675, with a 6-month lease.
You can look them up on the web. They've got a PDF format listing of current rentals available, that's updated frequently.
We're moving, now, due to my job, but that's one place (if I were moving INTO the area) that I'd want to know about.
Good luck with your move! I agree with the poster above about how there are just different levels of desirability. It's a cool town!
