Hi all,

First off thanks for taking the time to read a post I am sure has been posted up here about a million times before. My wife and I are looking for a house in Nashville near Vanderbilt where she will be working. We have found a house we like near Hadley Park which seems very close to Vanderbilt. My question is as follows, is this a neighborhood that children will be ok in? I have used the Nashville PD interactive crime map and it seems to be ok as far as that goes.

Any information that could be offered would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Hadley Park is right "next door" to Tennessee State University; it's traditionally been considered THE park for the black community. I passed by that areas every day on my way to MetroCenter, but I don't really know the neighborhood that well. It's seem to be mostly older, fairly small houses in that neighborhood. It's certainly not a rich neighborhood, but most of the homes seem to be well-kept.

I'm completely guessing about this, but I would think that most of the residents are middle-aged and older; it just seems like that kind of neighborhood looking at it from the outside. You can see the area from the Interstate, and I don't see a lot of kids out and about, or playing in the yards.

I believe we have a member here who lived in that area while he was going to school at Vanderbilt. I can't remember the person's name at the moment. Perhaps he will find this thread and offer you more information than I can.

Thanks for the response alleycat. We are going to view the house this weekend, and we will drive around the neighborhood to see how it stacks up.

Do you have a budget in mind? We might be able to suggest some more areas to look at, but a lot would depend on your budget. Nearer Vanderbilt will be more expensive, but there are some areas within a short commute to Vanderbilt that are not too expensive (relatively speaking).

We did not want to spend anymore than 150k. Judging by the rate of foreclosures in the city and the amount of houses that fall into that price range it seems more than an apt starting point. Access to Vanderbilt is paramount as is a "safe" neighborhood. We are a white family who would not be adverse to living in a "Black" community as long as it is family orientated. Thanks for all the help!
