So, where's a good place for a soft butch/tomboyish woman in Nashville, TN to get a really cool short haircut? I get a lot of static at salons which cater to straight women. Stylists don't want to cut my hair as short as I want because they think it will look too "butch!" I got my head shaved a local barber shop a while ago, but the barber seems to have a clientale of mostly conservative older men and ex-military types. He could do a good flattop or crew cut, but I would like something a bit more trendy. Usually, I end up giving myself a buzz cut at home out of frustration.

Any suggestions?

What part of town are you located?

I am centrally-located. I don't mind driving a reasonable distance (half-hour or so) for a good haircut. I am looking for a skilled professional barber/stylist who specializes in short haircuts for men and women.

You might try the Belle Meade Barbershop on Old Hickory in Bellevue. Ask for Shawn (look for a fairly young guy who looks like a whiskey barrel with legs). He's not the barber I use there, but from what I know of him he'd be willing to try to give you what you want. It might be easier the first time to go during the less busy hours. They don't really take appointments there, but weekday mornings are generally less busy than afternoons. You should be very specific about what you want; if you could bring a photo of the style you want that might help as well. This is a guy's shop, but I'm sure Shawn would be glad to have another customer.

I might see you in there sometime.

Just use a Mach 3 and some Gilette foam. Doesn't get more butch than that.

Default Thanks, Alleycat

Great description of Shawn, the barber, by the way.

And I wasn't kidding, although I think he has lost a few pounds.

If you decide to go to the shop I mentioned, you might call ahead and be sure Shawn is in the day you plan on going.
