Mt Juliet/Hermitage -power lines (Murfreesboro, Lebanon: houses, neighborhoods, new construction)

Hi,
We are possibly relocating into the area from Illinois and like some of the homes around the Mt Juliet/Hermitage area. One thing I noticed though is all the power lines are overhead. Is this typical around Nashville? Are there any areas where these are buried? I just feel this looks horrible- nice homes with an ugly power poles and overhead lines in the front yard.. Any suggestions on this?

There are developments where the power lines are underground, but for the most part power lines are still overhead here. I don't know anything about MJ or Hermitage specifically, so I don't have any recommendations.

There are many areas of above ground power lines due to the expense of digging/blasting/drilling through the rock that is prevalent just beneath the topsoil in much of the Nashville area.

Brookside Woods in Hermitage has all of their powerlines underground. It really makes a huge difference in the feel of the neighborhood.

What part of Illinois are you from?

I think Mt. Juliet now requires underground utilities for new developments, but the older neighborhoods will generally have the overheads. As gbone said, underground work is expensive because of the rock-slab nature of the terrain, so builders typically didn't bury the electric/phone/cable unless they had to.

In Murfreesboro, a large majority of the power lines are underground.

We live in central Lake County, Mundelein, north suburbs... thanks for the info. Makes sense if bedrock is so shallow... that probably explains the lack of basements also...

The lack of basements threw me off at first, but you can find houses w/basements in some older neighborhoods. Most new construction, however, won't have basements. You can find newer neighborhoods with buried power lines. Our subdivision, Brookside Woods, has them buried. We looked at another subdivision down the road before this one and I liked Brookside a lot more as soon as we drove in. I couldn't figure out why until we had moved in and our neighbor told us the buried power lines really attracted them to the neighborhood. It makes a huge difference in the feel of a neighborhood, imo.

There are so many power, phone and TV Cable lines hanging over Donelson Pike near Lebanon Road, they put up anymore and the street will be in total darkness in the daytime until the street lights come on at night. Every major route into Nashville looks this way. (Not the Interstates). All that wiring reminds me of the back of my home entertainment center.

The lines are not so bad in my neighborhood though. Just don't let a tree grow within 30 feet of them or the power company will come along and hack the death out of your poor tree.

I, for one, wish we did not have so many street lights in our neighborhood, as I cannot see the stars at night. Our street is lit up like an interstate at night. But, I have to admit, I like the street light in my front yard, as it does add a little security at night.
