Thinking about relocating near the Nashville area. Wondering about the hospitals there. Can anyone tell me which is the best hospital as far at payscale and nurse patient ratio? Also, would like to know if taxes are high? Considering buying land out in the country and driving to Little Rock to work. What about the crime rate? Will just be driving into Nashville to work. Would like to know what would be the best small town to live in? Any information would greatly be appreciated. Thank you Debbie

it all depends on where you work and where you live on the crime rate, taxes ( which I think tn standard in all is 8.25) then you have the county tax on that.
as far as pay rate, it probably depends on teh hospital as well and your experience..

Also, what are you looking for in a town? What do you like/dislike? What is your price range?

Debbie-

There are so many hospitals here, and non-hospital nursing jobs too. What type of nursing do you do? There are all the hospitals that fall under HCA (at least half a dozen in the area in and around Nashville), Baptist and St. Thomas which have merged and also have MTMC under them in Murfreesboro, and Vanderbilt. I know several people who say Vanderbilt pays well, but is a meat grinder, since it is a teaching hospital filled with medical students. However, the benefits, if you have children, are great. Vanderbilt will help send YOUR kids to college if you are an employee there. The nurse to patient ratios are going to vary depending if you are talking about an intensive care unit versus a floor unit versus the ER.

Thanks for all the info. Actually we would like to live outside of Nashville in a small town and I would drive into the city to work. I have worked in the ob department many years but pulled to other floors to cross train. I prefer ER or ICU. Thanks again
Debbie

I have a similar question to Debbie's, in that I plan on retiring from the Ithaca Police Department in Ithaca, New York in the Spring/Summer of 2010 and plan on pursuing a job as an RN in the Nashville area. I have my RN license and am currently working per diem on a med-surg floor. Although I won't be coming into a hospital with a huge amount of experience/skills, I think that I'll have a lot to offer.
My wife and I, along with our two children (one in high school and the other in elementary school), would like to find a neighborhood that offers the followning:
1. Safety (Nashville has a high statistical crime rate which is above New York City's).
2. Good School System.
3. Affordable Housing (3 bedroom, 2 bath, $120,000-$160,000 price range).
4. A neighborly environment where we can feel as though we belong and won't be considered as outsiders for too long a time.
Any input would be great....JAY

Maybe 30 to 45 minutes away from Nashville. A town where you don't have to put up bars on your windows and tall fences to keep burglars out.
Price range, well actually we prefer several acres of land preferably in the country. I don't know what land is priced at in Tennessee. So maybe someone can give me an idea on this post.
Thanks Debbie

Be wary of the hospitals that offer large sign on bonuses. There usually is a reason for this. And it means there is a problem of somekind. The good ones (hospitals) don't make a habit of this. Might try a nursing forum on the net, for better inside information on hospitals there.

I figured that. Also another concern is the crime. Is it as bad as Memphis? And what is there to do for fun as far as teenagers?

That's not true in all cases. Many hospitals offer sign on bonuses because there is a severe nursing shortage in this country. There are many well respected hospitals that offer sign on bonuses as an incentive.
