We are going to be getting a home inspection done on a 7 yr old house in the area,
Is it advised to also do the Radon test?

We didn't have these tests in NY so we are looking for some advice.

Thanks all

Radon is an issue in many homes in the area (though going off of memory, the statistics are relatively low)...but still, it is ultimately a personal decision and not a requirement for closing or any lender.

It's called a silent killer for a reason...and my personal thinking was (and is) that though the test can be a little pricey the peace of mind to me is worth it.

We did it, and our agent always had the seller pay for it.

I'd also ask the tester (or research ahead of time) how often radon should be tested? Seems like I've read that an initial testing can be negative but that can change over the course of several years. Which makes sense because it comes from decaying matter underground. The anecdote I read was that someone did one at purchase and again at selling that registered higher.

Seems like there was a public health scare with radon back in the 80s in our area. I can vaguely remember Channel 4 running (during sweeps week probably) "how your home can kill you" type reporting on radon and it becoming somewhat of a buzzword afterwards.
