Default Let's get real.

Let me break it down for you. If you are an obsessive parent who wants the best education possible for their child & wants them in college ,then there are 2 or 3 public high schools in Davidson County to send your child. I would say those schools are Hillsboro, Overton and maybe Hillwood.

The other public school option is the magnet school system. The magnet high schools are great and I believe Martin Luther King Jr. High recently won a national award. Hume-Fogg is another magnet high school located in downtown Nashville.

McGavock is probably in the top half of schools in Davidson County and may even be the 4th best. Stratford is known for gangs and may have the worst or second worst repuation of high schools in the city. Maplewood has done so poor academically in tests that due to the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), it might have to close or just reopen under a new name. FYI, Davidson County is under a corrective action plan per NCLB.

Nashville schools do NOT have a good reputation and many parents in Davidson County send their children to private schools. Historically, this is due to a myriad of reasons: white flight, busing/no neighborhood schools, religious reasons & the nationwide trend of the middle & upper middle class leaving for the 'burbs. Recently, Nashville has had an influx of refugees from places like Kurdistan (nothern Iraq) and Somalia bringing more English as a Second Language issues. Imagine going to school to learn English while your parents speak another language at home. Not easy!

This does NOT mean that someone cannot receive a great education in Nashville public schools (Post is your child had a good experience in Nashville!). However, one should be aware of the public perception of Davidson County schools.

Thanks so much for the feedback.
I am looking for a house to rent and Stratford and McGavick were two of the schools in the last two houses we looked at. Were looking at one near Hunters Lane HS on Thursday..
The owner of that house tells me her kids go there and have never had a problem
