I am graduating from UA this December and will be looking for work. My buddy just landed a job in Brentwood, and I would like to set up a roommate situation, but won't be able to go up there until January. I will be working as a valet driver while trying to get my career started, so I will be working downtown.

The main thing we are trying to figure out is morning commute times. I would assume that commuting from Brentwood TO south Nashville takes longer than from south Nashville to Brentwood. Can anyone confirm this? What is the min-max commute times you've encountered?

Also, do you have any recommendations as far as good apartments to live in (fairly close to the downtown area)? Our budget maxes out around $800 per month/person.

Thanks everyone for your help.

That depends a lot on what you consider to be 'South Nashville' and what exit you will be getting off at in Brentwood.

Brentwood has a lot of office space, so it's actually probably the busiest reverse commute exit in the metro. Not exactly a piece of cake, but not necessarily worse than downtown. Taking 8th Ave/Franklin Rd isn't a bad alternate...although slower than the interstate, it generally does not have a lot of traffic.

I'm not going to give you an approx commute time, because it varies a lot. I would figure you should allow 30 minutes, but you'd likely make it in a bit less. Traffic is the key.

Okay, I'm looking at an apartment close to the interstate currently. The cumberland is one that's on my list. My friend's work will be on Cadillac Drive in Brentwood. On Google maps it's quoting 16 minutes with light traffic.

Definitely not 16 minutes during rush hour. I-65 @ Old Hickory Blvd is a zoo.

Is this going South and North? Or is it heavier on one side?

At rush "hour," it can take 15 minutes just to circle off the Old Hickory Blvd. exit ramp into Brentwood from the south.

You need to find apartments in the Nippers Corner area off Edmondson Pike or just past there along OHB or off Franklin Road in Melrose or off Thompson Lane so you can use surface streets to commute.

The average rent in Nashville is around $850 now. In the other thread, you say your budget is $500 per person. $800/month per person will definitely give you more options.

I think it's still a little heavier going north in the morning/south in the afternoon...but not by a whole lot. As I said earlier...Brentwood has a lot of office workers.

Where it is the heaviest is actually coming from the east in the morning, and going west in the afternoon (on Old Hickory Blvd).

Yeah, I sort of messed up my budget in this thread, but couldn't go back to edit my post.

Where I'm originally from, it took me 20 minutes to get to my old high school from my house, and it was literally 5 miles away. So commuting is obviously gonna happen anywhere. Optimally, I'd get an apartment where I could walk to work but that's not the kind of society we live in. Since my friend and I will work in different parts of town it's gonna have to come down to some sort of compromise.

I noticed Jamestown is a good middle ground, good reviews, good price. How's the traffic on Nolensville and Edmondson Pike during rush hour?

Perhaps for rent you can look at the apartments in Bellevue. Commute to Brentwood via OHB. Get to downtown via I-40 or US70S.
