The nation's largest grocery store chain is getting even bigger -- and possibly, tonier.

Kroger said Tuesday it's buying Harris Teeter Supermarkets in a $2.4 billion deal, which will increase by three the number of states in which it operates to 34.

I was wondering what happens when there is a Kroger within a few blocks of a Harris-Teeter? Isn't there a H-T where Moon Drug Store used to be about 2 blocks from the Belle Meade Kroger?

I love Kroger so this is good news. I have never been in a Harris Teeter. Does Nashville have those?

There are five HTs in the area. They are upscale stores; think "between Publix and Whole Foods" on the spectrum.

I didn't see where they had plans to close/rebrand any Harris Teeter stores (at least so far as they've said), which is good.

The whole thing may be an attempt to find another weapon to fight off Publix, which has been expanding in traditional Kroger territories in recent years. Same with the whole Kroger Marketplace concept.

I agree and think you're right Islander. I dont see how re-branding the stores would be beneficial. Those who chose to shop at Harris Teeter currently over Kroger would probably just find an alternative.

Count me among those who love Harris Teeter but hate Kroger. So now I'm in a quandary. If Kroger is smart (which is a big if) they'll leave Harris Teeter alone. I remember how Kroger ruined Smith's out west, and I'm afraid they'll do the same to Harris Teeter.

Krogers tend to be dirtier, not as friendly check out clerks, and I love that they unload my cart for me... I don't like Publix (too friendly) so HT is a nice balance of good quality and just enough customer service.

I also love that HT put aside mint chocolate chip individual ice cream cups for my son's bday party because I didn't have the freezer space to store them, but wanted to make sure they had them on party day and they special ordered my mojito mix.

I don't hate Kroger, but Harris Teeter is higher quality across the board. My fear is that while they may keep the brand distinct, the quality of certain things could fall (such as the meat department, where HT is far ahead of Kroger).

I also fear that in a market like Nashville, they could close stores that are in close proximity to a Kroger...such as Belle Meade and Brentwood. I don't know how the Kroger's in those areas are doing financially, but with competition from HT and Publix, it has to be tougher for them (and in B'wood's case, Fresh Market, too).

The only way this works out well for us is if Kroger leaves HT to manage itself, and remains distinct from Kroger as a more upscale grocery.
