Hi! I'm going down to Nashville & I'm exploring opportunities in the Music Education field. I'm sure that Nashville being a "MUSIC CITY" there would be other areas of education besides studying the Music Biz (i.e. Record Labels, Publishers, etc.). I'm Not a student, but I would like to know:

Is there any Music Preparatory Schools?

Meaning, I taught K-8th grade for 6 1/2 yrs. in Parochial school system & even tho' I'm interested in Teaching Music @ a COLLEGE LEVEL (Prof.) someone suggested that since I really don't have High School teaching experience that I could look into working @ a Music Prep Dept. where I could help (H.S.) kids get into a Music College. I know in my alma mater College (today my alma mater's music program no longer exists since the person who created the Conservatory like Music Prog. had retired the school only uses a couple of music courses as a MINOR or That subject you take as an ELECTIVE) they had a Music Prep Dept. or Division.

So,
If there are Colleges/Universities that do have Music Prep Dept. or Divisions please let me know.

I'm really interested in helping kids Prepare for College (I remember how STRESSFUL & NERVE RACKING it was when I went for my 1st PIANO AUDITION when applying for a Merit Scholarship. W/ all that trauma I GOT IT!! - of course I was sick w/ stomach pains the week AFTER the audition, but it was worth All the time and energy.)

Anyway, I'm open to any suggestions.

Default Just to clarify ...

So you are asking about jobs in a college/university to help high school kids get into a college music program, correct?

Not a job IN a high school.

I would start with Belmont University. It has several undergrad majors in its music department and the master's program has 6 majors.

Wmsn4Life,

Yes, I am looking for jobs IN a College/University to help high school kids get into a college music program" NOT IN a H.S. Ok, I'll look into Belmont Univ.

Off the "top of your head":

Do you know if they have one?

I only have a MASTERS IN MUSIC ED. & I looked @ their Music Prog. which is VERY SIMILAR to my Alma Maters Old Music Prog. (Very Conservative like). But what about others like Vanderbilt? Plus, I don't know how a Music Prep Dept. - Division works. Meaning,

Aren't Music Prep Departments located on a separate site OFF the College/Univ. campus?

Meaning, I could be wrong, but

Aren't there Music Prep Schools that have their own program, but still helps kids to get into a College?

I know I need to do more research learning about Music Prep Schools, but I was just curious. Anyway, please feel free to share any extra thoughts. Thanks for your input.

I'll admit this is not my area (music ed) but I have not heard of a music prep school. Doesn't mean it doesn't exist here. I would imagine it would be part of a guidance/advisory/admissions office, but maybe not.

I went to Vandy for grad school, but it's not ringing any bells for me. Check their Blair School of Music.

Someone will chime in. In the meantime, I'll need to do some Google-fu.

There is Nashville School of the Arts which has a very good reputation for preparing students for schools like Berklee, Julliard etc, but it is a high school.

Both Vanderbilt (Blair) and Belmont have music programs for the pre-college crowd that I assume would draw more serious musicians.

Vanderbilt has a college prep music program for young students (Saturday classes) through HS. This sounds like what you are looking for. The same program also has adult continuing ed classes. It's your basic conservatory prep program. If you are interested in teaching piano, I am pretty sure, unless there is some unusual emergency, there are no vacancies in the near future. Never the less, you could send a resume to Blair school of music. BTW, Belmont offers more pop and jazz, if that's your scene. Blair is more traditional, although they do offer some jazz and country/bluegrass stuff.
