I am considering accepting a Job offer in Smyrna, TN. I now live in Chicago and considering Murfreesboro or Smyrna as a place to reside. I have been offered a salary package that is less than what I earn in Chicago because of the cost of living. Can anyone help me figure out what the cost of living is in Murfreesboro or Smyrna?

I moved down here from Lindenhurst, IL 3 years ago. Here is the best I can do. Houses are much cheaper. I live in a subdivision just outside the Murfreesboro city limits - brand new all brick construction, 3-4 bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths, etc will run about $260,000. Taxes (county only) will run about $1,800. Electricity is much cheaper, gasoline runs 30 - 40 cents agallon cheaper. Water is the only thing that costs more. Dining out is a lot cheaper as well. Hope this helps some. Let me know if I can tell you anything else.

Cost of Living comparison calculator

according to this, to keep the same standard of living, you could make 24% less. In the example I punched in, if you make 50K in Chicagoland, you need to make just under 38000 to keep the same standard of living in Murfreesboro/Smyrna.

Default Commuting

If you are going to commute to work, make sure your work is further away from Nashville than your home. The highway system around Nashville is like the spokes of a wheel with Nashville as the hub. Most people go toward the hub in the mornings and away in the evenings. If you do the opposite your drives will be much better. So, for example, don't live in Murfreesboro/Smyrna and commute toward Nashville.

I moved to Murfreesboro from Florida 2 1/2 years ago. I found everything to be less expensive here. I bought a 3 bedroom, 2 bath 1200 square foot 5 year old home for $124,000. I could have spent more, but it wasn't necessary. County and City taxes are $1200 per year. If you live outside city limits you will save about $400. My power bill runs $50-75 in winter, $75-100 in summer, all electric. I really like it here.

I don't want to point out the obvious BUT Illinois has a 5% income tax on earned income. Tennessee does NOT.

My electric BILL is considerably higher than it was in the Midwest. I rarely ran my air conditioner in the Midwest; here in Middle Tennessee, I run it 24/7 for nearly half the year.

Tennessee's sales tax is higher and Tennessee taxes groceries. I don't know if Illinois does.

I lived in Shelbyville for 3 years 25 mins from Murf.after moving from NY the cost of living is is much cheaper. The country side is beautiful. My electric and water was all in one bill and the highest bill I ever got was 150 and that was with 3 other people in my house and christmas lights on 24/7. If you would like more information about Shelbyville I would love to help.
