We're moving to the Franklin/Brentwood area and trying to figure out which school district would be best for our family. Our daughter has high functioning autism and will need some special services (speech & occupational). She is very social and thrives in smaller class sizes - under 20. What elem. schools are best for this? Brentwood or FSSD? Any specific schools that we should look for? We're planning on a house buying trip in the next month and will tailor our home buying around the schools. Thanks for your help! God bless-

FSSD is known to provide better services across the board.

FSSD hands down. My son has been both in FSSD and WCS. FSSD was a pleasure to work with I can't say the same for WCS.

Thank you! Are there elementary schools in FSSD that are preferred?

FSSD is all going to be rezoned this year. Poplar Grove will no longer be a lottery school.

Friends at Johnson are happy, same with Moore. Mixed at Franklin Elementary (but that could be more the family than the school)

What made FSSD better to deal with than WCS? Were the services better or the people you deal with? How is the class size comparing the two?

the little things. I work outside the home. WCS wanted my pre-schooler to go to therapy across town in the middle of the school day with no transportation. FSSD sent the therapist to his school and schedule our meetings at his school at drop off time. We are back under WCS now. All summer long they kept telling me they may not have the funds to provide services for the full-year, etc. It caused me many sleepless nights. I feel I really have to fight for everything with WCS vs them just doing what is best and right for my kid. I have a friend that has sued WCS twice now to get services (and she wone both times).

We moved here in the spring of 2011 from out of state w/ a child on the autism spectrum, whom I homeschool. I did check out the schools and if I were to enroll her, I am more comfortable with the philosophy of FSSD than WCS.

WCS has an over-focus on all inclusion all the time that IMHO does not benefit all students. My child has some co-occurring conditions and when I asked some questions about that, they were quick to assure me about FBAs and BIPs to control behavior. I don't want behavior control. I want needs met. And that may not be possible in an all inclusion all the time setting.

FSSD seems to be more flexible in terms of what is in the child's best interest.

I withdrew this child from public school in our previous state several years ago and didn't like what this area had to offer any more than I liked the last state we were in. Homeschooling has been a good option for us.

Good luck on your move.
