Hi

We are planning a move to Nashville in the next few months from Charleston, SC. My husband is an electrical contractor and there has been little residential construction here, and not much commercial. We visited there for a few days last month to get a feel for areas and liked the southern suburbs. We are hoping to find something to rent/buy in the southern more rural area south of Franklin, Fairview, Dickson, etc. We lived previously in the mountains of NC, so the area feels a lot like home to us

We went from a 25 acre lot in NC to a 1300sf duplex here

I am wondering if there has been any upturn in local building that anyone has noticed. He would rather do commercial, but residential is fine too.

I design fashion and sell online, so I can work anywhere. I'd love to have a bit more space for a studio, however. After living in the Charleston area, everything in Nashville seems really spread out.

We liked Lebanon, Franklin/Cool Springs and some of Brentwood. I loved the Anthropologie store in the Green Hills(?) area

I have been looking at RealTracs as it has been mentioned several times. We may be looking to rent first and would rather rent out in the country, rather than an apartment. Does anyone know of a way to find rentals in the small towns and rural areas south of Nashville?

Also, as far as a home business, are there any tax advantages to any counties/towns in and around Nashville over others?

If anyone has any suggestions for local places to contact for selling fashion locally, I'd love that...esp in Franklin. I design one of a kind fashion and wedding gowns.

Thanks so much for all the help

I'm afraid most of the building is with the Music City Central convention site. There are other projects like the Omni hotel & addition to the Hall of Fame yet to begin. another large project is the rebuilding of Opry Mills Mall. There may be other work to repair damage from last May's floods.

For rentals in the outer area you may find it easier to search in specific areas once you get here. You may find other restrictions on a home-based business.

There are a few projects going on around town. Things haven't totally stopped, but they've slowed quite a bit from the pace we had going about 3-4 years ago.

There's the Music City Center, Omni Hotel (and Country Music HoF expansion), an apartment/condo project in Germantown, a Drury Plaza in Cool Springs, some condos in Melrose, and a number of random smaller projects going on around town.

What I don't see a whole lot of is neighborhood construction. Yes, there are a few spots where it is happening...but it mostly seems like neighborhoods that are continuing their planned builds (phase II-III-whatever) and filling out. Not a whole lot of projects starting from scratch.

I've noticed that commercial construction seems to be up in Hendersonville...probably the most we've seen since 2007.
Residential construction is still way off pre 2008 levels where it seemed like every month a 100+ home subdivision was breaking ground.

Thanks everyone. It seems like the picture is about the same there as here...maybe a tiny bit slower. I appreciate the information. Better to know what you are facing so you can plan. Thanks again!
