I have been accepted a job offer to work at the Dell distribution center. I am only 21 years old and I would live on my own for now. I am looking a one bedroom apartment in a decent area. My price range is anything up to $600. I have only been to Nashville once, and that was when I was only 7 when I had went to Opryland, but since then, I have never stepped foot anywhere around the area and I do not know much about Nashville.

Well I would like to know the usual "generic" moving questions listed below

- What are the good/bad areas
- Where are the good clubs/bars located

Also, if anybody is originally from Memphis, could you provide a comparison of Nashville neighborhoods from Memphis neighborhoods.

Completely different imo. Downtowns are a bit similar with country instead of blues but it ends there. Nashville has a lot more to offer for the younger crowd and there are some great bars and venues on elliston place which is right next to the Parthenon. You also have the Gulch area which is a nice place for young professionals downtown. 12th street is another area with few good bars. Then of course theres downtown which is a bit touristy. Not as crazy as beale street but similar.

What about the area with the Bell Hollow apartments? Its affordable, looks like a decent area, close to alot of shopping centers and the mall, and its only about 12 minutes from my job.

People go hot and cold on Antioch. I had friends who lived there for 3 years on the other side of the highway from the apartments you mentioned. It was OK. The apartment was a bit run down and there were some tough looking characters in the parking lot. I'd certainly come and take a look first. I think your price point is a bit low - have you also factored in wifi, cable TV, electricity, gas? I'd also say phone but no one has landlines anymore (except me).

Maybe consider sharing - there are a LOT in your price range and you'd have a higher standard of living:

nashville rooms & shares classifieds - craigslist

All the best!

Hi, HHH. Nashville is good. Lots of very nice neighborhoods. The dynamics here are different from those in Memphis. In Memphis, there's the massive Midtown area, literally hundreds of blocks where young and middle-aged folks live, walk, play, etc. Nashville doesn't really have that. Rather, in Nashville, good neighborhoods are abundant and are spread out across the city. There's not one big massive area like Midtown; rather, there are these great little pocket neighborhoods. Nashville doesn't have much residential activity downtown, at least when compared to Memphis. The 12 South area is almost a sort of proxy for downtown living in Nashville.

You'll really just have to visit and spend some time looking at the various areas. It won't be like Memphis. You won't feel so constrained when looking for safe or nice areas.

Since I was hunting for an apartment just last year, I can say a bit about your budget. If you look very, very carefully, there's a chance you can find something small (a studio or garage apartment) in some of the better neighborhoods. Otherwise, you may want to look in some of the closer suburban areas. I have a 2-BR apartment in one of the closer suburbs; it's fairly nice and costs just under $900 per month.
