Does anyone 'get' how this new emissions control thing will work? I seldom take the highway so wondered where the sensors are? My plate is due for renewal in August. Should I just go get a test the old way or just hope I trigger a letter in the mail saying I passed? It was in the paper today and even though I read the article twice, I was still confused.

Cicada poisoning, I think . . . . fuzzy brained. I still THINK I hear them . . . .

I would plan on going to the emissions testing facility right now. The way I understand it, it is in a testing/pilot phase right now. My guess is it would be unlikely that you'll be scanned in the new method before August.

Basically they'll be setting up these scanners in high traffic areas to detect your emissions...like interstate on-ramps. There are high speed cameras that snap your license plate number. You just drive through like normal...you may not even notice the testing station. Your vehicle has to be tested twice and once that happens, they match the results up with your license plate number and send you the results. Once you get them, you then can send in $10 (what you'd normally pay for emissions testing) except now you won't have to sit in line for half an hour and wait for the old standard test.

I actually talked to one of the bill's sponsors and I'm told that Colorado does this already. They estimate about 60% of all their emissions testing is done this way. It will be a big time (and money for the state) saver in the long run, but right now it will be hit and miss until it rolls out completely.

Let me know if that answers your question.
