My wife and I are staying at the Renaissance downtown and were wondering if there are any good local places for breakfast around there within walking distance that will be open Sunday morning. We are aware of the Puckett's downtown and usually visit the Leiper's Fork location, so we're wanting to try something else.

Also, I used to live in the area, so know about the Pancake Pantry that also gets suggested, but I don't always keep up with the eateries immediately downtown and would prefer to walk to breakfast. Any suggestions would be great! If nothing looks promising, we'll probably just grab brunch at Sperry's on the way out of town. Thanks in advance!

Breakfast downtown on a Sunday is probably slim pickings. Mostly just hotel restaurants. All the places in the Arcade would be closed...likewise for most of the places in the District. Obviously there are a few Starbucks around, but that's not really "special". The only place I can think of is the Capitol Grille in the Hermitage Hotel. I've never eaten there, so I don't know what the breakfast is like but I'm sure it is fantastic and upscale.

I'd probably check out Monell's in Germantown. You could walk there from the Renaissance, but it would be a haul. I'd probably drive...even though it's just a 5-7 minute drive. They have a really good breakfast there and in case you've never been or heard of it, it's all family style.

Wish there was more out there...but there just isn't...even on a weekday.

Don, thanks for reminding me of Monell's. Sadly, I lived in Nashville for 10+ years and never had the chance to eat there. This may be the perfect opportunity to try their breakfast!

How do they handle the family style with 2 people? I guess just seat you at the first large table when 2 seats open up?

if you're going to Germantown anyway, I'd definitely suggest Germantown cafe for sunday brunch, though they don't open until 10:30 a.m. so that might be a problem if you need to eat earlier. another thought is hermitage cafe, it's a greasy spoon dive place but it has a cool vibe and generally good comfort food.

Exactly. They have several large tables for people with smaller groups. Every time I've gone I've had 2-4 people so we usually get seated there. You may have to wait a little while a) for table to open up or b) to wait for more people to show up. Being family style, obviously they don't want to start a group of 4-5, then have 4-5 more show up halfway through the meal.

But on a Sunday morning, they'll be busy enough that you won't have to worry about waiting for more diners. In fact, I probably would suggest calling for reservations just to be on the safe side.

Germantown Cafe is excellent, though I've never had their brunch. I'm sure its good.

Hermitage Cafe ...good idea! I haven't been there in a long time, but it is a good one for diner food. Same goes for the usual west side establishments of Rotier's and Elliston Place Soda Shop...but my guess is on Sunday mornings, they're both closed.

The OP mentioned that, but said they go to the one in Leipers' Fork fairly often.

I can attest that the one downtown is as good as the one in Franklin (haven't been to the Leiper's Fork location). It does not disappoint.
