Today I took my kids to Ethridge, TN. We bought a map of the Amish family farms in the area and began the driving tour. We met some really nice people and bought a lot of candles, soap, candy, canned goods and craft items. More importantly, my kids were exposed to another way of life. The lively conversation with my kids on the way home was well worth the 1 hour (each way) drive from Franklin!

If anyone else is looking for a great way to spend a few of these last, precious hours with your kids before school starts, consider Ethridge. We passed a few other sites along the way we've already visited that are also high on our list, like the Saturn Plant Tour, Rippavilla, and Oaklawn.

Any other suggestions? We still have a little time, and would love to hear about a place your family enjoyed.

Default Amish Community in SW Kentucky

The Amish are very wonderful people.

My wife and I travel a couple of times a year to an Amish Community in Kentucky. The community is about two hours northwest of Nashville near Interstate 24. We bought two wooden lawn chairs from an Amish Craftsman. His workmanship is excellent. The Amish sure have pride in their work.

My wife loves shopping in the Amish General Store for baking supplies and fabrics as she love quilting. Plus the prices are so reasonable.

We found another community in Southern Indiana, while we were celebrating our anniversary in May.

hmmm.. we went and were alittle disappointed.
The General store ...well not much home goods from Amish..just regular groceries.. Mainly..a bunch of tourist garbage....we walked thru the furniture stores.....
again...not sure what I was expecting...but..just not a big deal...
did I miss something?

Did you go to the store that stocks all of the goods? It's on the right when you first get into town. Set back from the road amid some smaller buildings. The best part for us was visiting the family farms.

I was told that there was another Amish community about an hour north of Nashville. Has anyone been there? And if so how was it? Compared to the Ethridge community?
