OK, so I know y'all will think I'm obssessive with submitting so many questions on pools, but...

I've noticed that in Florida and other Deep South areas, some people like to put screen enclosures around their pools - Google Image Result for http://www.armstrongaluminum.com/images/PoolEnclosures/Screened_Pool_Enclosures2.jpg

I wonder why people typically do not do that in the Nashville area (or in areas further north). Is it because the bugs are not as bothersome here? Is it because people are worried that snow/ice in the winter would collapse the screen? Or have people just not thought of doing it here?

Enlighten me please!

I think you answered your own question. Snow, especially around here, can get very heavy, even if it's just an inch or two. It's not the light, powdery snow that they have out west. Ice also accumulates, and a good ice storm has been known to snap utility poles in half. Imagine what that would do to one of those Florida-style screened-in swimming pool enclosures.

We also have lots of leaves this time of year. It is frustrating enough to clean out gutters every fall, I can only imagine how irritating it would be to have all those leaves on top of a screened-in swimming pool enclosure.

I always thought they had those in Florida to keep the Gators out! I have friends from the Miami area who said they had one in their parents pool more than once. Not sure if that really happens all that much though - never lived in Florida.

My sister-in-law used to live in Tampa and had the only house on her block without a pool. She said the pools all had a screen over the lanai to keep mosquitoes and other bugs out because they are supposed to be so much more of a problem there.

We don;t usually use those here, though.

I think it's a bit of all of the above. The cost of building a pool is already much more expensive here than in FL so adding a screen is just an added, unnecessary expense.

We have plenty of mosquitoes here but NOT the infamous love bugs that crawl over everything in sight. Gators seem to be the most likely reason for screens around pools in FL. If there's a pool of water around they will find it.

LOL its always funny to see what people's perceptions are of a place you live from outsiders.

Gators are not common. I have lived down here almost 35 years and only have seen gators at the zoo, everglades trips, and at UF (yes its more than a mascot).

Screens are common in Florida because you could not swim or sit by the pool in the summer due to the mosquitoes.

Good to know Wow! I haven't been to Florida in about 20 years but was a bit freaked out the prospect of gators milling around. Looks like it's safe to visit afterall

There are gators in the waters around Disney World. Not just Bay Lake, but the waters around the resorts, as well.
