Quick question on marriage licenses since I am getting conflicting information. If I am getting married in Nashville can I apply for my license in a county other than Davidson? I would prefer to go to Williamson if possible to avoid a long drive. I have heard some people say you must get your license in the county you are having your ceremony and others say a TN marriage license is valid in any TN county, regardless of the application or wedding ceremony location. Any info would be helpful...thanks!

I called the City Clerk's office for Davidson County. The number is (615) 862-6256.

Best to go straight to the source with questions like this. I think with everyone turning the internet, we forget there are, in some instances, REAL people with answers just a phone call away.

A Tennessee Marriage License is statewide. You can get married anywhere in the state with a license you get in any county.

Best wishes!

Thanks...sometimes it seems easier to post a question on a forum than pick up the phone.

I will call both the Davidson and Williamson county clerks this afternoon to make sure their stories corroborate with each other.

Interesting...I had some friends who got married in a county in West TN and they picked up the license there even though they live in Davidson.

Let us know what the county clerks say...

We live in West TN and when we got married, we got our license in one county but got married in another. Unless something changed in 8 years, you can get it wherever you want and get married wherever you want in TN.

OK, I spoke with both the Williamson and Davidson county clerks offices. They both said that you do NOT have to get your marriage license in the county where you are getting married. I guess that answers that question!

Just a question ??? Maybe I need to ask this in a different post , But why do people go to county clerk and get a license ( permission ) to get married ? . I have been with the same women for 47 years, had friends witness our statement of love for each other , wrote it in our family bible. All this legally in the eyes of my GOD.

Because in the eyes of the state, marriage is a legal contract. I'm sure you can get married in a church, with friends there, etc. and be perfectly married in the eyes of your religion and yourselves...but until you sign the certificate the government may not recognize it. At least not if it's a recent wedding.

I know. I always turn to the internet first but I think it's helping to create a world where no one TALKS to each other. I don't even use the phone much with friends. And I think I am worse off because of it . . . .

Anyway, best wishes whereEVER you marry!
