We are from West Palm Beach, FL and seriously considering a move up to Hendersonville. I have read quite a bit about TN having a low cost of living but I want to hear from some locals what they think. Do you think we will notice a much lower cost of living in Hendersonville verses South Florida?

This study shows TN to have the lowest cost of living in the nation:

Cost of Living 1st Quarter 2010

Hendersonville is a great area and coming from FL, you should be able to find a deal here!

vive's right...we do have a very good cost of living. Wages here are generally lower, but so too is cost of living.

Hendersonville is a very good place to relocate. A good diversity of home prices, good schools, a well-managed city, lots of amenities/shopping/restaurants with more on the way as soon as the economy turns around, and a pretty easy commute to Nashville. There are several of us from Hendersonville on the board, let us know if you have questions.

I think you will at least find property taxes to be lower. I'm not sure about electricity, but coming from the NorthEast, it was a LOT cheaper. Food prices seem to be pretty much the same. Sales tax is higher here. Give us some prices of things you are concerned about and we'll tell you what they are up here! My Mom and I moved from CT in May and are very happy here . . . .

Depending on whether you're within Hville city limits or just outside, the cost of water is something actually to think about. Sounds crazy I know... but we live just outside the city limits in the White House Utility District and our water utility prices are not regulated by the city government. We pay for all of the subsidized water in Hendersonville proper! We've spent more money on water in the past 4 years living here than the rest of my life combined (multiple times more).

But, otherwise, I believe you will find TN and Hendersonville to be a low cost, high value place to live.

I don't have specific information on Hendersonville, but you will find lower car insurance here due to the fact that TN does not have the "no fault" provisionn in their laws. As an example, instead of paying $477 every six months in FL, I now pay $310. Tags for your car are no less, but the one thing I have had a little trouble getting used to is that they charge sales tax on groceries. In FL, you don't pay any sales tax on groceries (unless it is a pre-prepared type item). Keep in mind that sales tax in this state is higher than FL, even though both states do not have an income tax. There is an estate tax here, but that's only if your estate is worth over $1 million. Unfortunately I don't have to worry about that one!! Overall, from what I gather from friends and family still in FL, gas is about $.10 cheaper in TN.
