Hello everyone this is my first posting!; I just had a question i hope no one gets offended by it; i am hispanic and my boyfriend and I are looking to relocate to Nashville, TN; I wanted to know if there are any areas that you would recommend in which there is not a lot of racism; I've never been outside of Florida so i don't know how it is up there; They have a great nursing program offered and Venderbilt Hospital and if I would relocate in December.

I was thinking about living in a suburb like Brentwood, Franklin, Hendersonville, Mt. Juliet. And commuting, are these areas ok?

Thanks!!!

All of the areas you mentioned are great communities and popular among newcomers to the area.

There really isn't any area of town that I would say is more or less racist than another. I'm sure you can find some degree of racism in every part of the city. The most progressive parts of the city are in the East Nashville community and the West End/Vanderbilt area in my opinion. East Nashville is a very diverse and liberal-leaning community but it does have some rough edges. The West End/Vandy area has a lot of ethnic diversity and has a younger feel to it. That said, I don't think you'll have major issues with any of the other communities you mentioned. Our hispanic population is growing in this area. 2 young professionals, irregardless of race, should fit in most anywhere.

I would advise renting for awhile to see what part of town appeals to you the most...that way you'll get the lay of the land and can find an area that suits your needs the best.

Good luck and congrats on the job offer!

Nashville is very accepting of professionals irregardless of ethnic background. You won't have any problems.

I second what DonCorlene says. You probably want to stay close to West/End Vandy or E. Nashville and Sylvan Park also is a nice option. If you are looking for more house but yet pretty close to Vandy, the Nippers Corner and Crieve Hall areas are good options, too.

You will likely be perfectly fine here. Some of the satellite towns that are experiencing high growth and are just now seeing an influx of racial, ethnic and religious minorities are still struggling a bit to adjust to changing demographics. You'll have to remember that many of these places were really small, bedroom communities a short time ago.

I know for a fact LaVergne had a series of lawsuits filed against the city recently and I have a friend who has had a handful of problems in Hendersonville that are of a more subtle nature. Still, I wouldn't think this would be a significant problem in the Nashville metro. This is an increasingly cosmopolitan city with transplants from everywhere. It probably won't be a overwhelming change for you unless you're coming from the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale metro. Just be mindful that there are still some folks with the "good ol' boy" mentality like some parts of Florida.

Also, illegal immigration is a hot button issue here just like it is in other parts of the country. Some people tend to get a bit heated in this debate and make blanket generalizations that can be offensive. Again, I am sure you've experienced this is Florida as well. Just ignore them as I don't believe their indicative of how you'll be treated in Nashville.
