The Flame is a kind of goofy video as you say, the interesting part of that is John Taylor popping his head through the door holding a contract, but I have to disagree about Goodbye is Forever (and the rest of the Arcadia videos for that matter), that video is loaded with symbolism. It is basically the story of what it was like to be in the most successful band on the planet surrounded by everything you could possibly want but feeling like you are just being towed along (almost pushed along, note the hands behind their backs). All the clocks are about time (obviously) in the sense that everything has a limited amount of time and we must be able to say goodbye in order to move forward in life. I could also write a whole page on the rest of the symbolism in there, the sun and moon, the flying high and falling back to earth only to find they are in a cage... etc. In the end they are surrounded by all of these beautiful women and a fantasy world but the walls seem more claustrophobic until finally the clock strikes twelve and the ride stops and they are confronted with a seemingly impenetrable brick wall but all they have to do is say goodbye to all of that and the brick wall disappears to reveal a natural landscape (as opposed to the artificial one they had been in) and they are finally free.
It should be noted that at this time during the split, there was a big shake up behind the scenes with Duran Duran and their next album, Notorious, was a new beginning. The song Notorious reflected some of the animosity that was boiling under the surface at that stage in their career...
Yes, I can tell you are a fan and I really enjoyed your background knowledge that you shared. I love symbolism and now that I am more educated about the inner workings I look forward to rewatching the video and looking for it. Thanks for sharing, I really enjoyed your post! lyra
