Yea, I thought that when Motown closed and the Tops, the Temps and others faded from the radio that R&B was passed. But it's clearly still going strong

After Motown, the late 80's-early 90's R&B age was the best. Artists like EnVogue, Babyface, Boyz II Men, Toni Braxton, Jodeci, and many other one- or two-hit wonders had some really good, clean dance songs and ballads.
