I'll be 70 years old next month, even used to play in a rock band when I was younger, and just this month listened to the sound produced by this device for the first time, consciously at least. Maybe I've heard it before and just never knew what it was. If you don't want to listen to this whole song, just skip to about the 4:15 part when he starts to play with it (clearest look at it at this point).

Is this considered an unusual device or have I just been out of it too long? Here it is.

I'll be 68 this year and I too must be out of it. I've also never heard of an eBow but then anything beyond a good sounding non-electric mahogany and spruce acoustic dreadnought surprises me.

It's most famous appearance was in 1987 when U2 used it after the first verse in "With Or Without You". REM had a song call "EBow The Letter" that featured one as well. The earliest song with one I know of was BOC's "Don't Fear The Reaper".

The sound of violin strokes can also be obtained using the guitar's volume knob and a delay pedal.
