Dolly sings this to her ex, Porter Waggoner...directly, shortly before he passed(she know he was gravely ill), and right next to him...Can you imagine the emotion welling up in him with her singing it right beside him?
She wrote it right after their break-up...I can't say I have ever seen anyone sing such a loving song right in front of their ex, let along in front of a huge live audience....
Prob one of the most emotional videos ever made, considering all I mentioned..
Enjoy...and those that are a little more sensitive here might cry a little, and thats just fine...
It's nice they apparently patched things up. (I believe she has a husband, I mean in the "they were friends again" way) I think the song was partly because the break-up, professional as much as other I believe, was a bit acrimonious and she was disappointed in that. Or at least that's the story I recall.
i often wonder how many people realize that Dolly wrote that song and it's not a Whitney Houston song-I prefer the way Dolly sang it much more.
I honestly did not know for many years she wrote it and sang it..thought it was written for WH and the bodyguard movie....imagine my surprise when I found out many years later that was not the case...Dolly's is infinitely superior to Houston's bombastic version..much more understated...the whole point of the song is melancholy and lost love..Not the sheer powering statement of love houston did...that is for people IN love.....Dolly emotes in the chorus and end, but with understated elegence..and that last verse is talksing, as it was on the original record...
her talk singing that last verse to porter in the video is mindblowing....
