Anybody have comments on the Movie Dances with Wolves?what they liked about it or not.any American Indians here ? who can give insights about the culture?the language ,customs of the Indians of the Plains esp. those deplicted in the movie.I'm always drawn to this movie have it in my collection .
I absolutely love the movie. I have it and have rewatched it over and over again. I also have and read the novel. I didn't know about the sequel. What is its title and author, so I may get it?
It makes me cry every time. In the end when you realize the battle is not going to ever be won and the Natives are going to be treated so horrible for years to come after seeing their culture is heart breaking. We are very nice people who have been misunderstood for so many years.

THE HOLY ROAD by Michael Blake.
Note that it is a sequel to the novelDances With Wolves, not the movie. There were some pretty significant differences between the two.
Normally, I am biased to thinking the book is always better than the movie, but since this movie was soooo good, was the book even better??? I haven't read the book, but I may look into it if it's an even greater project than the movie turned out to be.
I visited the "Fort Hayes" set in Rapid City, SD a couple of years ago. It was pretty cool walking down the hall & standing where Costner/Dunbar stood in Major Fambrough's office.

The book is very good. It's different than the movie though. In the movie, Dunbar befriended and lived with the Lakota. In the book it was the Comanche. Or maybe it was the Kiowa. Honestly, I haven't read it in ten years or more, so my memory is kind of fuzzy. But it's definitely a good book!
I also read the book and it was very detailed but the movie did do it justice even if it was a differant tribe.I always wondered what happened to Dances when he and his wife left the tribe, and according to a post here theirs a part 2 I have to get.the Holy Road, thanks Mark S.
The film was Costner's benchmark. So many great scenes - including the Buffalo hunt. Making a film of over 3 hours running time and captivating an audience all throughout can not be an easy chore. I'll assume the making of this movie temporarily drained all of his abilities as his next production (Waterworld) was a complete and total bust.
