I have to write a review for that film, but there are so many differing opinions. I have never been to Turkey- has anyone? If you saw that film is it realistic or did it portray the prison as a black and white/good vs evil stereotype?

Please help I guess I will have to take a trip there because I have no idea if the movie is realistic or not- a good excuse to travel!

If you're writing a review of the film then you should review the film as a film. Its accuracy doesn't have anything to do with whether it's a good movie. JFK is crammed full of innacuracies but it's still a good movie.

A lot has been written about the accuracy of the film and you should be able to discover much about it if you're really interested. You should also read the original book. I don't know that you'll get anything about what life is really like in a Turkish prison unless you find someone who was in prison with Hayes.

Both Hayes and the film's producer have spoken about what really happened and what was depicted in the film and book. Most Turks find the movie highly insulting.

Yes.
Midnight Express is artistically very effective for what it is, a scary drug-smuggler prison movie, but it certainly does demonize Turkey and the Turkish. Midnight Express is a film of its time.
If we were to judge every movie on accuracy alone, then films such as Braveheart, Tombstone, Birth Of A Nation. U-571, Patton, Mississippi Burning, Bridge Over the River Kwai etc etc etc would all be tossed into the circular file.

Thanks everyone!. I wanted to know more about Turkey as well so better start reading. I dont want to judge the country based on a film.

Oh heavens no. Don't base Turkey, or any other country, on any single film. Turkey is a fascinating country frequently at the hub of history. Turkey has was the site of Troy, Byzantium, Catal Huyuk, the Ottoman Empire, and was key to Alexander's Hellenization of the Middle East. If you're doing a report on Turkey itself, get ready to write a hefty, though certainly not dull, book.

And Turkish coffee is excellent

This is one movie I never tire of.
I believe I've watched it over 20 times in my life.
I watch it when it comes out on TV without fail.
I have the VHS and dvd.
Guess you can say I'm infatuated with that excellent story and film.

Plus, the movie is 40+ years old and should be viewed in that context.
