The Wolfman (Lon Chaney Jr) with the original Frankenstein as a close second. As for modern films, the list is waay too long to choose from, but, I will think it over.
If you're calling JAWS a horror movie, I'd have to go with JAWS, because it's one of my favorite movies. But I don't really consider it a horror movie.
In the horror genre, I have to go with PSYCHO, ALIEN, and THE SHINING.
I love the first 3/4 of HALLOWEEN, but I find the last 20 minutes or so a big disappointment. Great build-up with very disappointing payoff.
When I was young, my parents would not allow me to watch horror movies!
When I was a teenager I managed to sneak in a viewing of "Texas Chainsaw Massacre". I did actually watch the whole thing, but I believe it did permanent emotional damage. I had never been so freaked out by seeing something.
