I just watched Dear White People which is about race relations at a preppy university. It says it is a satire, but I found nothing satirical about it. There was some humor, but not satire. It was very real, very touching, and raised lots of questions about race and personal identity. Kinda drives home the idea that you can label people all you want, but we each have our own individual story. I really liked t.
Picked up a half dozen dvd's at a yard sale last weekend. Played one last night--Fire Down Below.
I don't know if you already know this or not, but the song at the end of that movie is called "Paradise" and it's sung by John Prine. "Daddy, won't you take me back to Muhlenberg county..."
Anyway, that song is probably older than a lot of posters here - I first heard it back in '73 or '74, I forget which. Anyway, I hadn't heard in almost 40 years when I saw that movie and that got me to getting it on a CD. Neat old song.
Had to put it in the spoiler box because, once again, the IDIOT who wrote the IMDB entry gives away 80% of the movie in a blink!
Anyhow, saw the movie at the theater when it came out in 1986 and from what I remembered then, it was a good flick, Saturday matinee wise. Apparently it didn't impress me that much because I haven't seen the movie since then and really didn't remember much, so watching it today (from a bargain box of Sci Fi movies), was like seeing it for the first time again.
It's a decent story and they did put some effort into making the flick. That, and the John Saxon of the 80's is nice to look at and makes a good villain.
DH and I are currently watching Seeking A Friend for the End of the World (again - we own it), which is currently on 'pause' while DH goes to 7/11 to get some ice cream. (I'm not feeling like eating sensibly -- might be the apocalyptic theme of the movie and its parallel to our present global situation.) We have good food in the house, but I'm in a 'to-hell-with-it' mood and would kill for Haagen Dazs!
Aren't you glad I weighed in (pardon the pun) on this subject tonight?
DH and I followed Seeking A Friend for the End of the World with Begin Again, starring Mark Ruffalo and Kiera Knightley in a wonderful film about making a live album in New York City.
This movie is dear to my heart because DH and I have done the same thing but using natural settings and sounds rather than the settings and sounds of the city. I'd post the name of the album here but then that would be (horrors) advertising. It's too bad too because I would love to share what we're doing with you all, just as we're sharing our movie favorites here. Not to worry; it won't be released for another six months anyway.
Romy and Michelles High School Reunion always a funny classic hehe and a reminder tha my ten year high school reunion is next year ahh!!
