its a little confusing re. the locations of "the shining" but yeah, estes park is where the hotel that INSPIRED king to write the book is, but that hotel was not used at all in the kubrick film. in fact all the interiors were shot on a soundstage in england.
.......... and the hotel it was filmed at is in Oregon, which is based on a hotel in Colorado...
The exterior shots were filmed at the famous Timberline Lodge in Oregon. The Timberline Lodge is unique and has no relationship with any hotel in Colorado.
A movie could probably be made about the building of Timberline.
The interior shots were done at a studio in England. Rather than reinvent the wheel, Kubrick and crew looked through books, mostly coffee table travel books, with pictures of hotels and motels in the USA for inspiration. The interiors were inspired by pictures of the Colorado hotel. The caretaker's apartment was inspired by pictures of a cheap motel.
The opening credits are actually filmed in Glacier National Park on Going-to-the-Sun road. I go there every summer for a few months and I read there that the road (only road in the park) was the filming location for the movie. Its a pretty awesome road with breath taking views.
This is easily one of my favorite movies of all time. The cinematography is outstanding, the casting was excellent, and Jack was absolutely off the charts.
Yes indeed it is!!!!!
I love this movie so much.... I wanted the ORIGINAL RELEASE! (100% analogue) so i could really experience the true purity of this movie!!!!! -- IT IS ABSOLUTELY GEORGEOUS!!!!!!!! (I am a major purist)
I did find the original release last week on VHS and I ordered it (ebay (1981 release)) and its the BEST/Purist form of the movie I have ever seen!! (I dont know if I have ever seen THE ORIGINAL UNALTERED MASTER of this!! -- The colours, etc are amazingly good!!!!
The one I have is 143 Mins so i assume this is the 1 they originally wanted to share with people.... This one DOES NOT HAVE the scene where he goes to the garage and pulls the wires out of the snow cat.... (Thats in the 144 min one)
Here is someone showing the START OF THE SHINING on thier videodisc player! (I think the road we see is Jack traveling to get to the hotel for the interview)
The Shining and Salem's Lot were a great read. I am a fan of Kubrick and did enjoy the film but
I always wondered why he didn't use the garden (animal) toperies in the film. Those were very
eerie in the book.
Hi all. I love movies and always want to know where they were filmed. I read through some of the posts and Mount Hood was the location of the 'Overlook, and it was based on Estes Park, CO, but the Opening scenes were filmed elsewhere. This is the link for the details: Kubrick's The Shining - The Opening
Thank you for the link my friend and welcome to City-data
I always thought that car WAS JACK driving up the mountain to get to the hotel!!
