Generally, most rom-com movies end up with happy endings.

Which ones are pretty much set up to fail?

And conversely which ones would be more sustainable.

For me, The Proposal (Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock) relationship would be the first to fail. It isn't setup for that relationship to be sustainable.

I saw this and am surprised it hasn’t gotten more replies. I guess people just don’t want to think these rom-com couples would fail. I’d have to pick movies I didn’t really like, like The Wedding Planner. There is just no way I’d care if those two got together in the end (and it’s not because of Matthew McConaughey because I like every other rom-com he made). I just didn’t buy those two together.

Actually I think that the Proposal is one that has a better shot since their plan at the end was to get married so that they could be in the same country to date. At least the plan wasn't to get married and that was the end.

My vote would be any rom-com set in high school, movies like Clueless, 10 things I hate about you, or She's All that, probably won't last past college.

Pretty Woman seems doomed to failure.

Yeah, I always feel a little weird about books/movies with a feel-good love story... only the characters in love are kids, so you know in a year or two it'll be over. Just seems like so much drama for a childhood/high school romance (actually, 10 Things I Hate About You popped into my head just the other day for some reason, and I was thinking that). I felt the same way about the end of the His Dark Materials trilogy (spoilers):
Spoiler
it's so sad and full of feels when the two characters who are in love have to choose to never see each other again.

And then you remember they're, like, 12.
