I LOVED that stupid movie! I thought the whole story line was clever, the same as I think Galaxy Quest is wonderful.
Asking science fiction movies to have "realistic" special effects is actually a little funny.
It's entertainment; I was entertained.
Thanks, Robert Preston (1918 - 1987). You entertained us all

OMG, Galaxy Quest is a total fave!! The first thing I watched when I got an Amazon Fire Tablet.
Very same genre; clever writing and fun characters. I mean, Alan Rickman and Sigourney Weaver and Tony Shaheeb signed up for it. Good enough for me.
I did not stop my fun to wonder if they actually would have survived the re-entry and smashing into the convention building.

By my calculations they are still somewhere in an NSA black site trying to explain where the ship came from and what a Thermian is.
Well, I am a long time Catherine Mary Stewart fan, so there is that.
This was on of those successful movies that was probably made off a game, a joke, an urban legend of the time.
The joke was about those games, such as Battlezone, which takes the initials of the highest players, mine was ALK, and puts it up on a board. What really happens, in the joke, is that when you put your initials in, your picture is taken and then you disappear one night to be taken across the galaxy to fight their wars.
Now, there's a cross, the initials on the game....and Catherine Mary Stewart.....as she was in "Night of the Comet"? A lot of movies of then sort of tie in together, if you know what to look for. Like "Miracle Mile" and the two sisters on the roof top with Uzis......."Daddy would have gotten us Uzis.".
Anyhow.....
I love the flick, it had such great lines such as the concept of death.

CMS was about one of the worst usherettes of all time in "Night of the Comet." While she was worried about getting hit by a "Dot" doing the job she was hired to do, mine would have been escorting the little snits out and enjoying every minute of it.
That joke, BTW, was undoubtedly started by someone who had read "Ender's Game." The movie came out much later and didn't have the punch of the short story. I won't mention the latter development of drones and search for skilled video game players as pilots.
I remember seeing this in the theater as a kid. I actually don't think that I have seen it since, but I was at a great age to enjoy it.
