I always refer to my dad's judgment on this. He was there. Here is his list:

BEST: PLATOON. Great movie and "the most accurate depiction of what it was like to be in the war."

HONORABLE MENTION: APOCALYPSE NOW. Great movie. No doubt. But not really about Vietnam. It's a Fantasy.

WORST: FULL METAL JACKET. "A ridiculous piece of ****" according to my dad, who is actually a huge Kubrick fan. But man, he hated this movie.

I think Apocalypse Now has the most stunning scenes and acting.

You cannot watch it and be unmoved.

How can one like Apocalypse Now, and dislike Full Metal Jacket? They are both over the top fantastical. Full Metal Jacket being a bit more.

I think overall, Platoon is the best movie about the Vietnam War. I do not want to comment about accuracy or anything, because I am not familiar (but I feel it was not too far off the mark), but it projected itself to be an entertaining, yet dramatic and "real" reflection of the war, and some personal motives, personalities, etc of people that were in it, especially showing from being new to experienced.
