Is the movie "Cats" vastly different from the hugely popular Broadway show? And if so, why was the Broadway show so beloved, but this movie was kicked to the curb by Rotten Tomatoes?

(I ask because I'm interested in seeing the movie, and will never see the Broadway production).

People who have seen both and liked the live version have varied on whether or not they liked the CGI. Otherwise, it's pretty close to the show (and the earlier movie).

If we presume that the majority of people who have seen Cats are people who thought they'd like it, the current Rotten Tomato score is that a bit over half the people who thought they'd like Cats did, indeed, like it.

I saw Cats in the theater once and I just hated it. It made no sense to me whatsoever. It was my husband's favorite musical (he has a thing for Andrew Lloyd Weber in general and I just think ALW's music is overwrought) and he was devastated that I didn't like it. Probably why we got divorced.

But I'm a musical theater geek and I'm interested to see how they put it together and the performers in it. So I'll watch it on TV next year...not going to the theater.

RK, thanks for the awesome review!

I love this post so much!!! I thought I was the only musical theatre geek who thinks ALW’s music is overwrought!! Can’t think of a single production of his that I like.

I'm a huge fan of CATS...seen the musical LIVE about 4 times from childhood to adulthood.

This movie wasn't too bad, but the musical's much better & the movie made a few slight changes to the storyline so it's not exactly like the musical.

I'd say a 7/10 for the movie.

As I mentioned, dance on the screen always suffers compared to dance seen live. Dance is designed to be experienced live, and that's probably more true of Cats! than most others.
