Just an interesting side note on those folks playing in the background of movies. I watched "Rio Grande" yesterday (about the 100th time) and became interested in the character of Captain San Jacques played by a guy named Peter Ortiz....This guy was a dyed in the wool Hero!!! X French Foriegn Legion, US Marine in WW2! 2 Navy Crosses, Legion of Merit on and on....

I'm not quite sure where the line is drawn between a bit player and a supporting player. I tried Googling for a distinction, and all the example they gave were people I'd term supporting actors.

How about Slapsie Maxie Rosenbloom?

Guess I never thought about that..
Here's what I found..

A bit part is a role in which there is direct interaction with the principal actors and no more than five lines of dialogue, often referred to as a five-or-less or under-five in the United States, or under sixes in British television.

A supporting actor is an actor who performs a role in a play or film below that of the leading actor(s), and above that of a bit part. In recognition of important nature of this work, the theater and film industries give separate awards to the best supporting actors and actresses

P.S> Maxie sounds like he was a heck of a fighter!
