A really excellent new movie starring Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill, set during his ascendency to Prime Minister in mid-1940. Oldman is amazingly on-target with his impersonation and is up for a Golden Globe already. The makeup is very convincing. Not a bad acting note from the entire supporting cast, either. Ben Mendelsohn as King George VI gives a subtle performance. The cinematography is lovely, each sepia-tinged scene is structured like a painting. The best movie I've seen all year; blows Dunkirk out of the water (pun intended).

I just came from seeing it. Stellar acting by all. The pacing was a big off for me. My only other criticism of it was the train scene. It reminded me of a 1940's war film. That seemed a bit romanticized to me.

Just left the theater, great acting, great cinematography, really a great story was told also. I would have to agree that the subway scene was a little off, especially with the rest of the movie being so amazingly real. But it got the point across. I give it two thumbs up and throw in several stars. Very engaging and enjoyable.

This will be the first 2017 film I see at the theater twice. Maybe tonight.

In all aspects I thought it was outstanding ( acting, costuming, set decoration, sets, cinematography - all of it! ) If this this film is not an Oscar contender, I will be greatly surprised.

I would have omitted the subway scene, but it was otherwise fantastic.

After binge watching "The Crown", I wasn't that impressed with this movie. Was Churchill really a drunken, SOB like the movie portrayed? Hard to believe when he was leading the country against the Nazi forces. But maybe I am naive.

The movie portrayal is actually pretty accurate. Churchill was a heavy drinker, and struggled all his life with depression. A saint he was most definitely NOT. But he was precisely the leader Britain needed at that point in history.

I wonder how many of the big five Darkest Hour will take home.
