I'm not sure whether popular = well reviewed, but here's my brief off the top of my head list covering both:
Star Wars the original--I never understood what the big deal was, and Princess Leia is NOT my princess
The English Patient
Chariots of Fire
Arrival--colorless in every sense of the word
The Gift (2015)--a humdrum rehash of every other Lifetime movie ever made
Gravity--would have been fine if the two main actors weren't over the hill and way too famous to be realistic
Lord of the Rings--I wonder if I'm the only person in the nation who has seen all but the last 12 minutes of the trilogy; I was interrupted as I was viewing it on DVD and I never cared enough to go back and watch the end
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them--so murkily filmed that sometimes I had no idea of what I was watching, plus the two lead actresses looked exactly alike to me
Bad Santa
Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas
Lost in Translation (thought it was boring as Hell)
A Beautiful Mind
Paperboy
Memento
Eraser Head (I actually know people who really liked it)
I liked:
M. Night Shayamalan movies (many people don't)
The Cook, the Thief, the Wife, and Her Lover
Titanic (lots of people didn't like it but I did)
Ditto on the original Star Wars. I fell asleep in the middle of it. Never had a desire to see any of the later ones.
I was 18 or so when the original came out. There was so much hype - it was crazy. So I had very high expectations. I remember walking out of the theater wondering what all the fuss was about. Never saw any of the others.
1. Apocalyse Now - it's not that I hate the movie. But apparently it doesn't keep my attention because I fall asleep while everyone is sweating in the jungle and I wake up to Marlon Brando, fat and mumbling, sweating in a cave or something. Every time. So apparently I'm missing something.
2. Last of the Mohicans - another movie involving sweaty men - apparently they put me to sleep. I always fall asleep during the scene where everyone is all wadded up in a cabin at night, talking by firelight, and I wake up right as the women throw themselves over the cliff. I guess a lot happens between those two points, but I wouldn't know because I can never manage to stay awake.
3. The Titanic. Pu LEASE. Ridiculous back story and will someone please shut that howling Celine Dion UP????
4. The Deer Hunter. OK, this movie falls under the category of "movies that would be better if they were just shorter," sort of like songs of the same ilk ("Hey Jude" is an example). This movie has good intentions but my gosh, tighten up the story line a bit.
5. The Good Shepherd - my husband and I actually walked out of this movie. We turned to each other about 3/4 of the way through it and my husband said, "Do you care anything about what happens to ANYONE in this movie?" I said, "No." He said, "Call me crazy but don't we have ANYTHING better to do with our time?" I said, "Yes - let's leave." Amazingly, there was suddenly some sort of technical difficulty at that exact time and so my husband and I got up to leave and someone in the audience actually shouted out,"But don't you care about the ending?" and my husband and both burst into laughter and I said, "We don't care about ANYTHING in this movie!" Funny side story - about a year later we were at some big party somewhere and a person there said, "Wow, I think I've met you before." We said, "No, sorry - doesn't ring a bell," and suddenly the person said, "OH MY GOSH - DID THE TWO OF YOU GET UP IN THE MIDDLE OF A MOVIE AND LEAVE A WHILE BACK?" We burst out laughing and said, "Yes - The Good Shepherd - we still don't know how it ended and still don't care!" and the person burst out laughing back and said, "That movie SUCKED. You're my heroes!"
Mad Max loved this / the Mel Gibson one
Blade Runner and this one
The Horse Whisperer lost interest in this one
AVATAR....snipped..my dh loved this one and watched it a couple of times.
THE MATRIX. All style. No substance. never could get into....ever.....
THE ENGLISH PATIENT. The single-most pretentious movie of the '90s. You know your heroes are unlikeable when the audience actually wants the Nazis to kill them. it was too long.....
AMERICAN BEAUTY. A very stylish movie with great acting that doesn't say much in the end. it left me cold and sorry I had spent the money and time...
DEADPOOL. If a thirteen-year-old virgin who did nothing but watch internet porn all day long were given $58 million to make a movie, this is what it would look like. never had any interest in watching it
Ghost probably my all time least favorite I dropped my copy in the trash just tonight.
I am stunned at the dislike of the Star Wars series, as well as, The Lord of the Rings. And, I like anything by the Coen Brothers......
I recently watched the two Hunger Games movies and they were okay I just would not ever watch them again. To me, Jennifer Lawrence had one expression through the whole movie, dead pan. Same thing with Frodo in Lord of the Rings.....pained and teary eyed but, it never varied.
And, I guess I am the only person alive who has never seen all of the Harry Potter movies, in fact, very few of them. I sort of like them but not enough to sit through all of them. I have a friend who is maniacal about the books and movies. We don't talk about it......
I love threads like these. I learn a lot of stuff......
