My parents had a good friend who had terminal cancer. She requested that this soundtrack be played as she lay dying. She wanted to leave this world with this music playing.

The execution scene in "Dead Man Walking" is powerful stuff, the music helps a lot with that.
This was the first movie that ever made me cry. If you haven't seen "Dead Man Walking," it is mandatory viewing. Susan Surandon won the Oscar for best actress, Sean Penn was nominated for best actor, Tim Robbins was nominated for best director. It's got a whopping 96% approval rating by critics on rottentomatoes.com.
This scene actually makes me feel sorry for a convicted rapist and murderer.
As mentioned, anything Bernard Herrmann did. "Psycho" is among his best (duh), but "North by Northwest" is my favorite.
The original "The Taking of Pelham 123" soundtrack is genius. David Shire uses serialism to perfectly represent the sounds of a bustling city. IMO, a perfect movie all around, and the soundtrack is part of what elevates the film as a whole.
