I'm thinking about Christmas movies lacking cloying sentimentality, chintzy set dressings and actors who look like models. Movies that are bittersweet, where instead of fairy-tale dreams coming through and happily-ever-afters, people experience pain and have to grow up a little. Movies that are filmed on days that are more typically winterlike - damp and gray, full of realistic people who act realistically.

Burger Fan hit it out of the park.

Best I can think of is Little Women.

Why are you looking for such a dark, depressing holiday movie?

DIE HARD. Yes! Also ...

GREMLINS

SCROOGED

A CHRISTMAS STORY

ELF

LETHAL WEAPON. Has not aged well, but it's still fun in its own stupid way.

BLADE RUNNER

TRADING PLACES

And even though it's super traditional, you have to check the version of A CHRISTMAS CAROL with Patrick Stewart. Really beautiful.

Why does a Christmas movie need to include pain? How is that realistic?

Not sure you can find a realistic Christmas movie because Christmas isn't a realistic time of year. Around Christmas, everyone loves everyone, helps the needy, and focuses on giving. Even grouchy cousin Pat smiles a bit.

Then it's over for another year.
