There is only one great Christmas movie that stands the test of time and its the original black and white "Miracle on 34th Street" from 1947. They don't make them like that anymore. Also "Its a Wonderful Life is a close second" also black and white from 1946. I realize most of the readers here weren't even born then (I wasn't either) but they are true classics.

My favorite contemporary Xmas movie is Love, Actually.
But I also love those old, schmaltzy ones from the '40s and '50s. Holiday Inn, White Christmas, Christmas in Connecticut and the like. The settings, the snow, the costumes by Edith Head, the extravagance! Great fun.

A Home of Our Own (93)- Its technically not a Christmas movie but it does feature one of the most depressing Xmas mornings ever. The movie is about a stubborn widow (Kathy Bates) and her gaggle of kids struggling to survive and build their own home. It's actually one of my favorite movies even though no one has ever heard of it.

A lot of movies somehow escape widespread attention.

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
Home Alone
The Santa Clause
The Muppet Christmas Carol
Ron Howard's The Grinch

I know it isn't a Christmas movie but New Year's Eve deserves some love too, pretty under-rated for one of those cross-sectioning story movies.

I can't believe no one's mentioned Bridget Jones Diary yet! I watch that every couple of years around Christmas.

Also, the original cartoon of How The Grinch Stole Christmas.

Then there's Earnest Saves Christmas.

But if you want truly depressing, John Huston's The Dead - set at a family Christmas dinner - should fit the bill.

Meet Me in St. Louis (1944), Vincente Minnelli ..... ★★★★★

Judy Garland, Mary Astor, and also stars June Lockhart, who played the mom in Lost in Space.

Debut of the song Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas. Starts at around 1:47:
