Can anyone think of any movies made from 2000 on that is or will be a true classic? Movies seem so dumbed down compared to decades past. Just more gratuitous violence, explosions, skin, snarky one liners. Where's the depth, the heart, the intelligence (again, not just witty one liners)? I struggle to think of any beyond animated (Shrek, Frozen). What movies from now will people theoretically love in, say, 20-40 years? Because I just don't see all the superhero/comic book stuff sticking, you know? Maybe Nolan's Batman trilogy. But they're generally becoming so oversaturated, it's hard to distinguish one from the next. And, I used to really love Avengers, Marvel, Spiderman, Mos, etc...but it's a bit much I think, especially all the reboots. (I groaned out loud when i heard about Ben Affleck playing Batman. I mean, really? So soon? Lets not even talk The Amazing Spiderman.) What will still matter in 30 years' time?
I would hardly accuse Shrek and Frozen of having depth and intelligence. Quite the opposite actually. Shrek had heart but was basically an endless string of one-liners. Frozen was about as deep as old onion paper.
When it comes to defining a "classic," the only true test is time, and I'm not sure enough time has passed for any movie in the past 10-15 years to be considered a classic. Most of the ones that immediately leaped to my mind were actually from the '90s -- THE IRON GIANT, THE INCREDIBLES, FINDING NEMO, TOY STORY, L.A. CONFIDENTIAL, GOODFELLAS, THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, PULP FICTION, UNFORGIVEN.
I'm having a hard time coming up with a single movie made since 2001 that might end up a classic. Something by Miyazaki maybe?
Movies are a microcosm of the direction that society has taken. Maximize profits. Now. Etiquette? Class?
Now we pay tens of thousands of Thought Cops six figure incomes to downvote and attack posts/posters that fail to worship the issuer of their almighty paychecks. 'Cause terrorists half way around the world. So they need access to all of our photos and all of our communication. How classy is that?
There are a lot of great, instant-classic movies from the last 15 years IMO. Right off the top of my head I think of Moon, Drive, American Psycho, Memento, Requiem For A Dream, the Lord Of The Rings trilogy, The Prestige, the Bourne trilogy, Up In The Air, The Fighter, Casino Royale, Pan's Labyrinth, WALL-E...
The Lord of The Rings was my first thought. Wall-E was absolutely amazing! I forgot all about that, I need to add that to my DVD buy list.
Out of all the superhero flicks, Nolan's Batman definitely earns a place. Maybe not all of them, but whichever one had the Joker in it. The rest just run together after a while.
I've never seen Frozen but it's been a looooong time that a cartoon has captivated so many children for such a length of time. They are usually obsessed with one until another comes out, but I think this one will stand out.

LOTR is a good bet. I agree WALL-E is a wonderful movie but I do question if it will become classic, as it's hardly remembered nowadays.
The was my exact thought on Frozen. It reminds me of the Disney "renaissance" movies which are still very beloved. I know many adults find it somewhat tepid (maybe overwatched) but the kids still love it, and likely will continue to do so, since the appeal is very broad. It likely has staying power.
Movies like Avatar, however...that has to be one of the worst box office hits of all time. Very shallow, cheesy acting, boring story. It made a lot of money, but I doubt it will be a classic, since it lacks any special appeal beyond digital effects/appearance. Technology will easily surpass it. I just can't imagine my (hypothetical) grand kids enjoying it.
I think is a pretty weak argument if the series is based on an already extremely popular book series. The fact is that there are very few movies that stand out in your mind stand alone from the last 15 or 20 years. It would make more sense if it was an obscure book that became an amazing movie. But I don't think you can use something like Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings.

Well, Gone with the Wind was an extremely popular book and I think everyone agrees it's a classic.
Same with The Godfather.
Personally, I think Harry Potter will dominate as the classic of the 2000s.
15 years? Shawshank Redemption is older (20), but was the first one that came to mind.
Inception?
Probably the Dark Knight, even if part of a trilogy.
Possibly the Harry Potter series.
I know! I keep thinking of movies from the 90's (The Matrix) but when it comes to 2000 - on, I draw a blank.
Inception is a good possibility, as is Memento (perhaps)? I just read there will be a remake of Memento (why??).
