There is far more to the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences than just actors and directors. Her coverage of the The Red Carpet is irrelevant because it is not part of the Academy. The behind-the-scenes people involved in movie production (costumers, sound techs, special effects, etc) are part of the Academy. The people who give third-party media coverage prior to the awards ceremony are not.

If you want to argue that her few movie appearances mean she should have been included, that's one thing. But being the "Queen of the Red Carpet" does not put her ahead of people who were actually part of the Academy. You may not recognize them, they may not be famous, but that doesn't discount their contributions.

They included film marketers, executives, costuming, make-up artists, etc. on top of actors, writers, editors, directors, producers and cinematographers. Why couldn't they just included Joan if they included marketers and executives? It's just five seconds or so.

It's not like she's the only one who was left out. And it's not like she hasn't received PLENTY of public recognition since her passing. How about just a tiny bit of recognition for those who contributed to the Motion Picture Arts & Sciences who haven't been otherwise publicly memorialized? They get their picture and name flashed up for a mere 2 seconds, and people are saying that Joan Rivers hasn't been recognized enough?? Some of these people worked in the movie industry full time for DECADES, but somehow Joan and her handful of small roles is more deserving of recognition? That's crazy IMO.

There were a few deaths in comedy that weren't recognized. David Brenner and Jan Hooks, both of whom were in feature films, among others.

Even though people hate Joan Rivers, she was a pioneer in comedy, and worked alongside the recognized Robin Williams a lot, especially on Rowan/Martin's Laugh-In. It's not like the Academy's never heard of her.

In the end it is the Oscars losing again since the ratings showed it was not well received and not many appreciated the underwear appearance and the bad jokes.

I think he will not asked back to host it and to avoid losing more viewers they may have to rethink for next year.

Last year they hit it out of the ballpark and it wasn't easy to get another successful year after that but to get such a low rating is not what they probably expected and then to get people to talk about such an Icon as Joan Rivers is not helping their either and as another poster mentioned...it would have been 5 seconds or less and not talk would have been about that.

Back in the days the oscars were often won by movies who made a lot of money like the Sound of Music, Ben Hur, Gone with the Wind...now with Amrican Sniper that clearly is well received by the public not getting any major Oscar is probably not well received either but the majority of the people and they could easily stop watching.

Aren't in the end the viewers the ones making sure advertisers will pay for an ad during the Oscars?

It is all business.

The academy awards only mentions members of the academy who passed away, once again MEMBERS..... joan was a comedian and tv personality.... she was never in any movies or was an actress and was never a member of the academy awards!

For example Shirley temple wasn't mentioned when she died two years ago (and she WAS an actress), why? because for decades she had stopped acting and was no longer part of the academy of actors that gives the oscars away, she had become an ambassador and was involved with politics, basically she was an ex-member and joan was never a member to begin with!

You're incorrect on a few counts ...

Joan was in movies.
Joan Rivers - IMDb (be sure to expand the Actress heading to see all the movies she was in)

Also, Shirley Temple died a year ago, and she was included.

Why would Joan Rivers be mentioned? It was for talented people.

Probably butthurt that she mocked their clothing on Fashion Police. Those Hollywood types are flaky.

She probably hated Johnny Carson's Hollywood buddies for not accepting her as a comedic talent worthy of her own empire.
I don't know that this is true. I've seen many celebrities who were roasted by JR who thought she was hilarious. Most recognized that she didn't play favorites, anyone and anything was fair game and didn't take it personally. At some level if JR cracked a joke about you, you knew you had made it. Se also did a lot of kind things with and for people behind the scenes. I think the industry respected her work ethic and how many times she was down and made a come back.
She certainly was the force behind making the whole Red Carpet thing a big money maker.
I saw interviews with JR where she discussed being hurt by the Carson thing but after some time she let it go. She let it go far earlier than he did for sure.

Do you guys even read interviews or are you just making all this negativity stuff up? I think leaving her out of the memorium was a mistake.
