The Changling--George C Scott ghost story--very little air play on cable now and few people saw it in theaters--
we did and at one point man in row in front of us literally jumped out of his seat and started crawling on the aisle to back of theater---
Agree with Silence of the Lambs and Jaws--
thought the first Alien was excellent for suspense--large cast killed off one by one in dark recesses of claustraphobic space ship...great!
Dalahanty, I was super impressed by "The Edge" when I saw it in the theater back in the 90s. I went back to the theater and watched it again with other folks. Amazing life lessons in that little gem.
Not sure what it means to call a movie a "sleeper" though.

Wonderwall, people generally refer to a movie as a "sleeper" when it didn't get much press and didn't make much money, yet has retained a particular fan base--an underrated movie.
I have to say, when DH suggested seeing it during its run, I wasn't interested. I'm glad I relented and went. It has everything, too. And I especially liked that it was fast-moving with one suspenseful thing after another. We have the DVD, and still watch it.
"Wait Until Dark" with Audrey Hepburn. Hands down.
"Jaws"...... nope. It was so non-suspenseful I got a hot dog right after Richard Dreyfuss opened up the shark and found a license plate. Of course he did! Sharks eat all kinds of junk and Robert Shaw (who could have dialed it back a few notches, IMHO) was the obvious choice to get gobbled up.
Spielberg had made a MUCH better thriller prior to "Jaws": "Duel" which was a Universal movie of the week starring Dennis Weaver and a Peterbilt tanker truck. That was edge-of-your-seat stuff when no one knew who Spielberg was.
