There's still too much left to come out yet for me to pick a best of for the year, but from what I've seen this year my top 5 would be (in no particular order):
- Birdman
- Borgman
- Life Itself
- Under the Skin
- The Lego Movie
Honorable mention would go to:
- Calvary
- The Edge of Tomorrow
- Frank
- Jodorowsky's Dune
- Nightcrawler
I recognize that Boyhood was a remarkable technical and directorial accomplishment. I just felt that as a movie-watching experience, it was good but not overly compelling.
Captain America: Winter Soldier but I never got to see Gone Girl, Birdman, Inherent Vice, Foxcatcher, Imitation Game, Mockingjay, etc. Chef was pretty good but didn't capture my imagination and attention like Captain America did. Such a thought provoking blockbuster spy movie.
