I don't watch young people's movies and so have never seen a Hunger Games film. I wanted to see this movie for two reasons: the genre, and Philip Seymour Hoffmann. If anyone loves cerebral spy thrillers reminiscent of the 70's--not Bourne Identity or James Bond, but films that feel as if they were written by a former spy--this movie is beyond good.

Hoffmann is so fantastic, and the ending such a surprise (and yet totally matter-of-fact). If you're looking for a movie without nudity or much cursing or violence, this is one for you.

I'm waiting for Nightcrawler to be available for streaming, but it has two negatives for me out of the gate. I don't like Gyllenhaal, and I adore Hoffmann. I read the first ten pages of Gone Girl and found it to be the trashiest of pulp fiction--the kind that pretends to be for "thinking" readers. And Affleck is next to Gyllenhaal on my do not care for list. Since I'm not drawn to films other than thrillers, I'll pass on Interstellar, which leaves: Hoffmann for Best Actor.

For me, Nightcrawler is #3 for the year. Ignore the main actor and concentrate on Robert Elswit's cinematography (normally works with Paul Thomas Anderson). There's also Rene Russo and Bill game over man game over Paxton.

Gone Girl drops to #5. I didn't bother with the book. David Fincher, so I had to see it. Rosamund Pike steals the show.

I thought it was great, and it made me all the sadder that we've lost PSH.

@f.2-- Yes, you're right about David Fincher. I'll drag myself to the Amazon Streaming Service in two months. What is your second favorite film of the year?

@Cida-- PSH just triumphs in this role, just...rules it. He's an out of shape, miserable, bitter, sexy beast. Sorry, it must be said. He made old, tired, worn-out sexy as hell, and he was never that in any role before.
